As Uganda prepares for another defining electoral season, the Electoral Commission (EC) has reinforced its commitment to ensuring that campaigns remain peaceful, fair, and well-coordinated. In a statement released this week, the Commission underscored the importance of discipline, responsibility, and national unity during the heated presidential race.

The Commission emphasized that all candidates must strictly observe the harmonized campaign schedule, which clearly designates dates, venues, and timeframes for each political team. Campaigns are restricted to the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., a measure designed to minimize potential clashes and guarantee equal opportunities for all contestants.

“This is not merely about timekeeping; it is about protecting the sanctity of our democracy,” remarked Julius Mucunguzi, the EC’s Public Relations Officer. He noted that adherence to agreed schedules is essential in preventing friction among candidates, agents, and supporters.

Beyond physical rallies, the Commission also addressed the increasingly influential digital space. Candidates and their teams were cautioned against spreading misinformation or inflammatory rhetoric online. Instead, they were urged to maintain a responsible online presence, mindful of the fact that social media has become a powerful tool capable of shaping public opinion and influencing national stability.

Law enforcement agencies have been tasked with ensuring compliance, but the Commission stressed that the responsibility ultimately lies with the candidates and their supporters. Respecting traffic regulations, avoiding incitement, and upholding the rule of law were highlighted as essential safeguards for a credible election process.

Importantly, the Commission reminded all stakeholders that the elections are not an end in themselves but part of Uganda’s long journey toward national development. While competition is natural in a democracy, the greater priority is safeguarding peace, unity, and progress.

In its closing message, the EC urged citizens to look beyond partisan lines and embrace elections as an opportunity to strengthen Uganda’s democratic foundations. “The true victory,” the statement implied, “is a Uganda that emerges from the polls stronger, united, and ready to advance its development agenda.”
