Electoral Commission Announces Revised Nomination Dates for 2025/2026 General Elections

KAMPALA – The Electoral Commission of Uganda has officially released a new roadmap for the nomination of candidates in the upcoming 2025/2026 General Elections, covering Local Government, Parliamentary, and Presidential positions. The announcement was made by the Commission’s Chairperson, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon.

Local Government Nominations

In a bid to streamline the process, Local Government nominations will now be staggered as follows:

  • District/City Chairpersons, Lord Mayor & Councillors: September 3–5, 2025
  • Municipality/City Division Chairpersons & Councillors: September 8–10, 2025
  • Sub County/Town/Municipal Division Chairpersons & Councillors: September 11–24, 2025 (excluding weekends)

Nomination forms will be available starting August 11, 2025, at District/City offices or online via the Commission’s portal: www.ec.or.ug.

Parliamentary Nominations

Nominations for Members of Parliament, including Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are now scheduled for October 15–16, 2025. These will be conducted at District/City Returning Officers’ offices. Guidelines and forms will also be accessible online from August 11, 2025.

Presidential Nominations

For the country’s highest office, Presidential aspirants may collect nomination forms and guidelines from the Electoral Commission Head Office in Kampala between August 11 – September 24, 2025, on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Key requirements include:

  • Signatures of supporters from at least two-thirds of Uganda’s districts
  • Party candidates must present official authorization from their political parties
  • Independent candidates must provide proof of registration as voters

Call for Compliance

The Electoral Commission has urged all aspirants to adhere strictly to this revised schedule to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process.
