Under bright blue Roman skies, the world gathered today in a moment of profound mourning and reflection to lay to rest Pope Francis, the beloved “pope among the people.” Concluding a transformative 12-year papacy, he leaves behind a legacy of humility, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to building a more inclusive Catholic Church.

The funeral Mass, held in St. Peter’s Square, drew an extraordinary gathering of humanity—over 250,000 mourners filling the vast square, among them world leaders, royalty, refugees, prisoners, and the homeless whom Pope Francis tirelessly championed throughout his life. More than 50 heads of state attended, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, standing together in solemn unity to honor a pontiff who transcended political and geographical divides.

The atmosphere was reverent yet alive with emotion. As the pope’s simple wooden coffin—marked only by the name “Franciscus”—was carried out of St. Peter’s Basilica by white-gloved pallbearers, the crowds erupted in applause, a moving tribute to the pope’s extraordinary life of service. Over 200 red-robed cardinals followed in procession, symbolizing the global breadth of the Church he led with an open heart.

In his funeral homily, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re described Pope Francis as “a pope among the people, with an open heart,” who worked with conviction to transform the Church into a home with its doors always open. Applause broke out again as the cardinal hailed Francis’s vision of a compassionate and welcoming faith.

Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88, after suffering a stroke and heart failure. His final public appearance, a blessing on Easter Sunday, captured his enduring spirit as he called for peace, unity, and hope across a fractured world.

In accordance with his wishes for simplicity, Pope Francis was interred at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, rather than the traditional papal tombs in the Vatican. It was a fitting final resting place for a man who consistently chose humility over grandeur, and whose life reflected a faith rooted in service to others.

As the Catholic Church now enters a period of sede vacante and prepares for a new conclave, Pope Francis’s legacy continues to resonate far beyond the walls of the Vatican. He will be remembered as a shepherd who walked among his flock, a reformer who bridged ancient traditions with the urgent needs of a changing world, and a global figure whose compassion, inclusivity, and courage rekindled hope in millions.

Pope Francis’s light will endure—through every open door, every hand extended to the vulnerable, and every voice raised for justice and peace.
