In an era where imported goods dominate the marketplace, Matongo Wood Works Company Limited is breathing new life into Africa’s cultural identity through the revival of traditional craftsmanship.

During a meeting with company founders Ms. Stella Teromu and Ms. Elizabeth Karunga at Mbale State Lodge, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni hailed the enterprise for its remarkable role in restoring African heritage and promoting homegrown creativity. Accompanied by the First Daughter, Mrs. Natasha Karugire Museveni, the President lauded the company’s innovative efforts in producing authentic wooden and clay household items that blend tradition with modern design.

“I congratulate you. You have resurrected the African heritage of our people, which I have been trying to preserve since the 1940s,” the President said. “Our people once used clay bowls, wooden plates, and traditional pots that were durable and part of our identity. These imported products replaced quality with imitation.”

He observed that the rise of foreign goods in the 1960s diminished the use of locally crafted items, eroding cultural pride. However, Matongo Wood Works’ commitment to reviving these products symbolizes a cultural renaissance, one that restores dignity, authenticity, and a sense of belonging to Ugandan homes.

President Museveni commended the company for modernizing ancestral craftsmanship while retaining originality, describing their work as “not just art, but quality, identity, and pride.” He assured that the government will continue to support local innovators who help reduce reliance on imported plastics and synthetic materials.

In response, Ms. Teromu expressed gratitude to the President for his recognition and encouragement. “We are honored by his appreciation and vision. Matongo Wood Works seeks to preserve the artistic wisdom of our ancestors by crafting household products that are proudly Ugandan yet suited for modern living,” she said.

Located in Naalya, Kampala, Matongo Wood Works produces a wide range of wooden and clay utensils, décor, and traditional household items that reflect Africa’s timeless elegance. Through their craftsmanship, the company stands as a beacon for the restoration of African art and culture, inspiring a new generation to rediscover the value of locally made heritage.
